- Data-driven instruction
Reading/literacy specialists are responsible for analyzing student data, highlighting trends, and using data to drive effective instruction. These specialists know that students learn differently, and differentiated instruction is needed for reading and writing achievement.
- ELA Teacher Support
Another part of the description of reading/literacy specialists are to provide support for ELA teachers. Some of the tasks include lesson planning together to develop explicit instructional strategies, locating meaningful practice for students, and providing in/out of class support.
- Explicit instruction for Small-group intervention
Connecting to providing ELA teacher support, reading/literacy specialists may also provide support by engaging below-level students with small-group interventions. These interventions provide differentiated instruction that is needed for each individual student.
- Leadership Support
Lastly, reading/literacy specialists support administration by providing a plan of action for achieving school and student success. This includes providing support to the school improvement plan that focuses on raising student achievement.
