Writing Activity

This writing activity is designed to foster students’ writing fluency, build on their composing skills, and provide an opportunity for them to learn to write from the text. It is for a 5th grade science class and involves a text about The Water Cycle. Students will be provided with a passage about it, embedded with new vocabulary words. After reading, students will complete a graphic organizer, along with a reflection piece that involves writing a complete paragraph. When finished, the teacher will select students to read their writing to the class. This activity provides an effective assessment that allows students to use reading as a tool to improve their writing. The writing piece will include prior knowledge of the water cycle and provides an opportunity for students to read widely on a topic to consider his/her own writing approach and background knowledge (Douma, 2023). This activity connects to the components that are identified by big ideas that denote individual practices of effective writing practices by Gary Troia. Troia states that component 6 allows for effective assessment and feedback for writing. Secondly, component 7 states instruction focused on writing skills.

Writing Process for Grades 4-6

  • Brainstorming

At this age, students should be able to brainstorm ideas. They should be able to develop their own ideas, thoughts and feelings towards a writing prompt.

  • Drafting

Next in the process, students should begin to draft writing pieces. This includes providing main ideas with supporting details and/or evidence in a organizational piece with text and sentence structure. Although this is a developing stage, this is where they organize their original ideas and thoughts.

  • Revising

This step in the process is about editing and revising to improve writing. This includes spelling and grammatical errors, punctuation, and overall tone of the writing. These are the last corrections before they present their writing.

  • Publishing

This is the production of the writing piece, with all errors corrected to their understanding. This piece of writing should connect their own ideas, thoughts, and feelings to the writing prompt. This shows mastery of the writing process.
